In its opening weekend, the superhero sequel starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx grossed $91.6 million in ticket sales from Friday to Sunday. That figure easily tops the $62 million opening weekend of its 2012 predecessor, but not the 2002 original starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, which opened with $114.8 million.
Last weekend’s top movie, female revenge comedy ‘The Other Woman’ starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton, earned $14.4 million in its second weekend for a total of $47.5 million since opening April 25.
Christian drama ‘Heaven is for Real’ held steady at No. 3 in its third weekend, earning $8.6 million for a total of $65.5 million since opening April 16.
Superhero sequel ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ fell two spots to No. 4 in its fifth weekend, earning $7.77 million for a total of $237.1 million since opening April 4.
Animated comedy adventure sequel ‘Rio 2’ dipped one spot to No. 5 in its fourth weekend, earning $7.71 million for a total of $106.5 million since opening April 11.
