Memorial Day feels like ages ago and the fun had over the extra long weekend deserves its own time of remembrance, if that's even possible for some of us. Regardless of how eventful, or otherwise, your weekend was, mine was full of new cocktails, new scotches and a delicious new-to-me rum called Phraya.
Phraya — meaning 'high ranking' — is a "super-premium" rum that uses a deep maturation technique uniquely developed to suit the tropical climate of Southeast Asia. It's great alone or in cocktails, like the one below, which is easy to make at home with your favorite Thai food. If you're like me, you don't have to pair it with any certain type of food or scenario, because you and I are capable of simply enjoying something for whatever it may be.
I had spent time over Memorial Day weekend with different groups of people, pushing drinks into their hands and asking for their reviews of the new stuff I snagged. I made enough cocktails with Phraya to kill the whole bottle, so you know people enjoyed it. The new rum cocktail we all tried is this:
- 2.5 oz Phraya Rum
- 3 slices Thai chili
- .5 oz Lime juice
- .75 oz Ginger syrup
- Soda water
- Muddle Thai chili and lime juice.
- Add four ice cubes and shake all ingredients.
- Pour into a double old fashioned glass and top with a splash of soda water.
After a few of these cocktails, a few people I know needed their own memorial day for Memorial Day. It was a good time, thanks to the scotch and, mainly, this Phraya rum.
Here are the tasting notes:
Phraya is smooth, rich in flavor and perfectly balanced with a golden
amber hue and a slight copper tint
Nose: Rich vanilla, honey and coconut, layered with a gentle spiciness
of cloves and raisins
Taste: Smooth, creamy, crème brulée and butterscotch, with an
underlying fruitiness of fresh pineapple and citrus
Finish: Smooth delicate sweetness, slight spiciness, with a long lasting
vanilla ice cream finish
