Sperm donor child support: Man ordered to pay child support to lesbian couple

A sperm donor will have to pay child support to a lesbian couple after he responded to an online ad and "donated" his sperm for them to have a baby. On Jan. 22, MSN reported that a judge ruled on the case, deciding that the man, William Marotta, will have to pay child support because he didn't "donate" sperm through an agency and the woman that he impregnated wasn't artificially inseminated by a licensed physician.

"The Kansas Department for Children and Families filed the case in October 2012 seeking to have Marotta declared the father of a child born to Jennifer Schreiner in 2009," MSN reported.

The sperm donor child support case was opposed by Marotta who said that he reached out to the couple that he had helped and they had proof that he signed a "waiver" saying that he wouldn't have any paternal responsibilities when it came to the child. However, the state claimed that the right to child support lied with the child and not with the child's parents -- and the "waiver" that Marotta signed was considered null and void because proper protocol wasn't followed.

"The state was seeking to have Marotta declared the child's father so he can be held responsible for about $6,000 in public assistance the state provided, as well as future child support," MSN reported.

So the sperm donor will pay child support -- no word on whether or not he plans to file an appeal.
