Have you made plans for Valentine's Day yet?
You could always check out one of Washington's most romantic spots but if that doesn't strike your fancy, how about a special night out on the town?
Two days before the big day, visit Woo at the Zoo, a special event for both couples and singles. You just might meet that special someone right in time for Valentine's Day! Learn about the dating and mating habits of animals from some of the zoo's animal experts. A $10 ticket ($7 for FONZ members) covers hors d'oeuvres, one long-stemmed rose and cupcake decorating.
Diamonds are a girl's best friend, so celebrate with the world's most famous diamond: The Hope Diamond. You can't actually gift this blue gem but a walk around the Hall of Gems at the American Museum of Natural History would be a sparkling way to pass the time before enjoying a special dinner at one of the nearby restaurants offering special Valentine's Day menus:
- 701 Restaurant offers an $85 four-course menu featuring grilled baby octopus, lobster paella and a dessert sampler. Enjoy live jazz throughout the evening.
- Cafe Atlantico brings Brazil to Penn Quarter. As part of its weekend-long "Carnaval at Cafe Atlantico" weekend, the February 14 prix fix menu starts with a "Carnaval Love Potion" cocktail.
- Rasika will certainly add spice to your celebration with its special four-course prix fix menu. Inventive first course options include Chili Cheese Banana and Pickled Oysters;for dessert, the Carrot Halwa Samosa puts a twist on a traditional Indian dish.
Take in a 360-degree view of the entire city from the viewing platform at the Old Post Office. From the building's 315-foot clock tower, you'll be at the city's second-highest vantage point after the Washington Monument. Guys looking for a truly "DC" place to propose: this could be the spot.
If the water is more your thing, hop aboard a Valentine's Day brunch or dinner cruise on the Potomac. Enjoy live music and dancing, a freshly-made cocktail and see the city skyline without anything in the way. Prices range from $63.90 (brunch) to $129.90 (dinner).
Check back tomorrow for a comprehensive list of special events in Washington on February 14.
