SPECIAL: Ringo Starr, friends honor Grammy nominee Klaus Voormann

As we've written this past week, Klaus Voormann's "A Sideman's Journey" was nominated for a 2011 Grammy Award for Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package.

Voormann was supposed to be in Los Angeles for the awards ceremony. Sirius/XM "Breakfast With the Beatles" host Chris Carter told us he was asked to host a tribute to him and also do an interview with Voormann.

But when he went to do the interview, he learned that Voormann wouldn't be coming to Los Angeles because he had suffered a fall back home in Germany and was taken to the hospital. The good news is he is recovering and doing well.

"So, instead of cancelling the event, I got the call that we were still doing it," Chris Carter told us on the phone. "But sitting in for Klaus would be Jim Keltner, Van Dyke Parks, Joe Walsh and Ringo," he said. "The thing was an amazing event. It was really special because they all came to bat for Klaus."

The event was held last week at the Biltmore Hotel." It was really classy and nice," Carter said. Among the attendees was Apple Records CEO Jeff Jones, as well as Ringo's wife, Barbara Bach, and her sister Marjorie, who is married to Walsh.

On display at the event was the original artwork for the Beatles' "Revolver" album that done by Klaus Voormann. The owner of the artwork is none other than Joe Walsh. He bought it in the late '70s at a Hollywood thrift store, Carter says.

"You know how it looks like the eyes are glued on? What it is is Klaus did the ink drawing, then he pasted those guys on and then he took a picture of it. And that's what he presented to the Beatles," Carter told us. "And that's what you see in the picture. It doesn't have 'The Beatles' (title). It doesn't have 'Revolver' (the title). It's just the picture. That's how you tell it's the real deal."

You can see pictures from the event with Ringo and friends and the original "Revolver" artwork in the slideshow at the left. (Thanks to Chris Carter for the story and the pictures.)
