The opening ceremonies for Special Olympics New Jersey will be taking place February 6, 2012 at Mountain Creek in Vernon, New Jersey. Beginning at 7:30 pm, a parade and fireworks will put the winter games underway.
With over 500 participants will be competing in winter events that will take place from February 6th to February 8th at Mountain Creek and Skylands Ice World in Stockholm, NJ.
Events that the Special Olympics New Jersey will be awarding medals in are Alpine and Cross-Country Skiing, Snowboarding, Snowshoeing, Figure Skating and Speed Skating. These events are free of charge for spectators and feature some of New Jersey best athletes. Visit the newly renovated Red Tail Lodge for something to eat and a break from the chilly weather.
Athletes participating in the Special Olympics are at least 8 years old and have been identified as being intellectually disabled, cognitively delayed, or a related developmental disability. These unique competitive recreational events are free for those who qualify.
Special Olympics New Jersey organization believes,
"that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports, adapted as necessary to meet the needs of those with special mental and physical limitations"
This is a fantastic opportunity to take the family to view some competitive winter sports at Mountain Creek the next few days. Not only will everyone enjoy the fireworks, parade and amazing athletes, but parents will have the opportunity to teach an important lesson about intellectual disabilities.
