There is a wonderful group that likes to hang out on a sailboat called the Blue Marlin in Kemah. The Sailing Angels are a group of folks led by Captain Dave McCabe who love sailing so much they want to share it with special needs children. By taking kids out for a sail, they learn about sailing from a team eager to teach them all about it. For some children, this might be the only way they can experience the sights, sounds and sensations of being on a sailboat on the open sea.
Captain Dave has them all outfitted with lifejackets and goes over the rules before they go anywhere, safety is the number one priority here. It is a joyful experience to watch these faces come to life with excitement and a healthy dose of fear as the boat pulls away from the dock and the sail begins. As the boat travels out into the bay, the lookout for dolphins, jumping fish and anything else in the water begins. The kids are encouraged to explore the sails, and take turns at the helm, there is of course a bell to ring as well. Having the wind in their face and the occasional sea spray off the water keeps the excitement level going. A ride like this is truly a gift this group enjoys giving to these kids. Passionate about sailing, The Sailing Angles provide these opportunities to pass on the joy of sailing free of charge.
