Right across from Brattleboro, Vermont's Amtrak station and across the bridge on the other side from the bridge over the Connecticut River to New Hampshire is a fun tavern that has loyal patrons from those two states and nearby Massachusetts: Whetstone Station. I was very happy to be hosted to experience it!
During cold weather, there's a roaring hearth fire in the dining room. In warm weather, they have patio dining overlooking the river. They carry many guest craft beers as well as 3 beers at a time tapped from their in-house nano brewery. Sampler flights are available!
The menu isn't pretentious -- I doubt they'd call themselves a "gastropub" -- but they definitely have gourmet touches on their menu. There are fresh salads made with organic greens and local cheese. A mac and cheese is infused with Porter-style beer. They've got roasted duck nachos.
But carnivores, you're crazy if you don't order the Drunk Rabbit Pot Pie! It's roasted local rabbit from Adams farm in Wilmington, VT with onions, carrots, celery, and fresh herbs in a light cheddar ale gravy topped with pastry puff. It's so tender and mild, flavorful and comforting on snowy days. Instead of a side salad, I had their smashed potatoes.
They have all kinds of special events, like mid-week live music and also, Trivia Nights. Go with a group of pop culture savvy friends! They have a bunch of regulars who take it very seriously . . .
