Many pets in the Utica/Rome area of upstate NY are on NSAIDs (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for their arthritis. Cold, wet winters, snow and ice all contribute to aching and pains in cats, horses and dogs in this area.
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is offering a free webinar on Wednesday, February 22 at 2 pm EST for pet owners concerned about the side effects of these drugs. Just as people taking aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen can have nausea, vomiting, ulcers, kidney failure or liver failure, so can our pets. Local veterinarians, including, Dr. Eldredge in Vernon, all stress that your pets should only be given these drugs under veterinary guidance. Cats, for instance can die from just one acetaminophen (tylenol) tablet. Always follow your veterinarian's dosing directions exactly.
The webinar will cover an overview of the science behind NSAIDs for pets, the side effects that are possible, and what you should do as a pet owner if you suspect your pet is having a reaction to veterinary NSAIDs. You can sign up for this free webinar here.
Commonly used NSAIDs in pets include Metacam, Previcox and phenylbutazone. These medications can work wonders for many pets when used correctly. It is important for pet owners to be aware of possible side effects from use of these medications, so they can be stopped right away if there is a problem.
This pamphlet from the FDA gives guidelines of what to ask your veterinarian if your pet will receive a NSAID for comfort and pain relief. There is a reminder for side effects to be aware of if your pet or 'best friend" is taking a NSAID:
Behavior Changes
Eating Less
Skin Redness, Scabs
Tarry Stool/Diarrhea/Vomiting
If your pet shows any of these signs, contact your veterinarian or the local emergency clinic - Veterinary Medical Center of Central NY in East Syracuse, right away.
