A Special Election is being held in Mississippi for State House of Representatives District 116 on January 11, 2011. This election is to fill the seat vacated by Steven Palazzo, who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives during the November 2010 election.
This election features eight candidates, six Republicans one Democrat and one Independent. Although party affiliations will not be listed on the ballots, their input and background will shape the next year's policies and programs.
What really makes this particular election important is the 2010 Census results. This Legislature will be responsible for creating the districts and redrawing the boundary lines separating those districts. The current Democratic majority means that the districts will be redrawn in a manner that roughly reflects their wishes. This election will not change the numbers, but it will reflect a different approach the politics related to the redistricting.
In 2011, a General election is to be held for Mississippi State Legislators, both the House of Representatives and the Senate, as well as the other State-wide officers, such as the Governor.
