Susan Barton, a leading dyslexia expert, will be giving free 3-hour seminars at the following dates and times in Southern California. Ms. Barton is trained in seven different Orton-Gillingham-based programs and teaches graduate-level courses on dyslexia through the University of San Diego. Ms. Barton founded Bright Solutions for Dyslexia and was recently inducted into the International Dyslexia Association’s Hall of Honor. Dyslexia affects approximately 20% of the student population, yet schools commonly do not test for dyslexia. As a result, it often goes undiagnosed, especially in children diagnosed with ADHD.
These informative dyslexia presentations are open to the public, parents, teachers, reading specialists and other professionals. Ms. Barton will share information about:
- what dyslexia is;
- classic warning signs that show up as early as age 1,
- how to correctly detect dyslexia early,
- common misperceptions and myths about what dyslexia is,
- inheritance patterns and genetic links,
- effective tutoring methods,
- simple accommodations in the classroom to help students diagnosed with dyslexia,
- why many children with dyslexia do not qualify for an IEP, and
- research based "best practices."
Ms. Barton will also be available to answer questions from the audience. Seating is limited so early registration is encouraged.
