Special “Art on Wheels” program in Balboa Park next week

Auto enthusiasts consider cars to be sculpture in motion. Some creative artists have taken this concept one step further and embellished a vintage Volkswagen Bug with over 2 million color beads to make a moving work of art. The work even has a name -- Vochol. It is coming to San Diego next Thursday, January 19, to start a nationwide tour. En encore is scheduled in Paris, France. The opening celebration for member of the San Diego Museum of Art for “Vochol: Huichol Art on Wheels” will be Thursday, January 19, 2012 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the San Diego Museum of Art.

This elaborate folk art tradition is also on display in the permanent collection of the San Diego Mingei Museum. An important part of the collection is decorative arts from Mexico, highlighting the combination of craftsmanship and application of traditional motifs in vibrant colors that have become the signature for this art.

“Vochol: Huichol Art on Wheels” has been organized by the Asociación de Amigos del Museo de Arte Popular in central Mexico. Vochol’s road trip will help drive cultural diplomacy forward. San Diegans have access to excellent Mexican folk art all the time at the Mingei, but most American cities on the tour do not have a similar museum. And many Americans do not have an extra twenty or thirty dollars to take their family to a museum right now. This novel approach to take art exhibitions on the road will be a welcome addition to America’s art landscape.
