Special adoption rates for large dogs offered by Kentucky Humane Society

Large dog kennels are full at the Kentucky Humane Society after rescuing more than 43 dogs and two cats from a puppy mill in Nancy, Ky. To make more room, KHS is offering a special rate on adoptions: $48 for dogs 40 lbs. or more. The special rate will be available Friday, Jan. 24, through Sunday, Jan. 26.

According to a news release from the Kentucky Humane Society, several people have expressed interest in adopting the animals rescued from the puppy mill shut down by the ASPCA and Pulaski County Sheriff's Office, but those animals won't be ready for adoption for at least a week.

The KHS was already caring for more than 400 homeless dogs and cats before taking in the animals from the puppy mill.

According to a WDRB report, more than 150 pets are currently available for adoption at KHS. But shelter space for large dogs is particularly limited. People can help by choosing to adopt.

"Many people have expressed interest in adopting the puppy mill dogs, but we have lots of other needy pets who are also looking for homes," said Susan Oppel, KHS director of operations.

Oppel explains it is particularly difficult to house big dogs in shelters in Louisville community because of limited kennel space.

"Big dogs take up more space in the shelters, so sadly there are fewer spots for them. This means that sometimes there is a waiting list for big dogs who need to come to the Kentucky Humane Society for adoption."

The $48 adoption special runs Friday-Saturday, Jan. 24-26. All adoptable pets are spayed or neutered, micro-chipped and up-to-date on vaccinations. This special excludes Jefferson County licensing fees and Legacy Pets, which are highly desirable breeds whose higher adoption fees leave a financial legacy for harder-to-place pets.

Last year, the KHS saved 90 percent of the animals it took in, and pets are never euthanized for the sake of more space.
