It’s obvious that well-known free diver and spearfishing champion Sheri Daye has a passion for the aquatic realm. After winning the Women’s Freedive Spearfishing National Championship title in 2006, along with several other titles and records, Daye became the host of the Speargun Hunter program for six years on the Outdoor Channel.
That same year, Daye decided to bring together different segments of the freediving, spearfishing and scuba industries for an “aquatic festival.” The result is The Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo, which celebrates its seventh anniversary next month in Ft. Lauderdale.
The two-day event brings out some of the notable names in the freediving and spearfishing world. Each has their own story and following. This year, in addition to Daye, other high profile figures attending and/or presenting at the show include: noted freediver Martin Stepanek, shark wrangler and swamp explorer Manny Puig, and “the world’s deepest man” Herbert Nitsch, who set the world record by diving to 702 feet on a single breath.
Daye explains, “Like most ocean-loving people, I've been through several phases with my diving. I've enjoyed scuba diving charters and travel destinations, tech-diving on deep wrecks, freediving and spearfishing. I'm now interested in underwater photography and videography.”
Exhibit space for the February 22-23 event has sold out and Daye said she expects strong attendance. “We strive to offer great deals, the best speakers and workshops in the industry, and the right atmosphere for attendees to meet other divers and have a great time,” said Sheri Daye, the event’s producer. “We’re now entering our seventh year and this is our biggest show yet in terms of both exhibit space and the number of exhibitors.”
