Since 2010, Denmark has one of the most strict dog laws in the world. It has cost the lives of hundreds of beloved family dogs. Thirteen breeds are already banned, but even dogs of other breeds are in danger. The Danish dog law will soon be under revision, but in the meantime the Danish dogs will continue to be sacrificed nearly daily, unless the killings are immediately put on hold. The official Dog Law, listing the banned breeds, is found on the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration website.
As many dog experts can attest, breed specific legislation does not work! According to the American Humane Association, “While supporters of BSL argue that the only way to be safe from dog bites is to eradicate ‘dangerous breeds’ from the community, there is little evidence that supports BSL as an effective means of reducing dog bites and dog attacks. On the contrary, studies have shown that it is not the breeds themselves that are dangerous, but unfavorable situations that are creating dangerous dogs. Often, the very research that some cite as ‘support’ for BSL actually argues for alternative, more effective means.” Apparently the White House agrees because last month President Obama came out against breed-specific legislation in the United States.
A team of animal lovers from Germany and Denmark have created a webpage called Hunde in Dänemark (HiD) to be an independent voice to educate people about the current situation for dogs in Denmark. They have also started an online petition to appeal to the new Minister of Agriculture.
Please sign the petition to show Denmark that people around the world are concerned and urge them to abolish the Danish dog legislation banned specific breeds.
