Speak up.

Being gluten free does not mean that you have to sit on the sidelines while others have fun.  It doesn’t mean that you always have to eat before going to big events.  It definitely does not mean that you have to drive here, there and everywhere to fill your pantry.  Being gluten free means learning to speak up and ask for what you want and need.

Learning to speak up can be very easy for some, while very difficult for others.   Speaking up with friends and family is a great place to begin.  If your family and friends understand your need to be gluten free, holidays and special occasions can be easier for everyone.  With wedding season approaching, this can be the difference between watching everyone eat and enjoying a great meal with them.  Many restaurants, banquet halls and caterers are accustomed to special requests.

Speaking up at the grocery store can be one of the most important skills you can learn as a gluten freebie.  A wealth of information can be learned from the manager and grocery staff.  One great example is that grocery stock is based on what planogram, or predetermined buying and stocking plan, that the store is assigned.  The Stop & Shop in Colchester has different stock than the East Hampton store because one store is an A and the other a B.  Some stores stock specific items for personal reasons, such as a family member with celiac disease.  If you talk to the staff, they can usually order items that the other store stocks.  Therefore, saving you trips to two or three different stores.  All you have to do is ASK.

Never be afraid to ask questions.  Communication with family, friends, food service professionals and grocery staff is just as important as communicating with your health care professional.  These people can help you eat safely and enjoy life.  If you have a gluten free child, your confidence in speaking up will help them gain that same confidence.  Speak up!
