Dr. Jan Pol, star of The Incredible Dr. Pol, National Geographic WILD’s #1 series and highest–rated telecast on the Nat Geo network slowed down enough to talk with this reporter about the importance of spay neutering cats and dogs. The show aired today on Pet Life Radio's Max A Pooch's Awesome Animal Advocates.
He discussed his own personal feelings about putting down companion animals because of overpopulation. "These are living, breathing, feeling beings," He Said. "It is such a waste and sad to see so many animals face euthanasia."
As is typical of this energetic veterinarian, Pol not only talks, he also takes action in raising awareness about subjects such as this. Last month he worked to raise awareness of the importance of spay neuter by working with the company Goodbones.
Pol explained, “Spaying and neutering is the best way to prevent overcrowding in shelters." I admire and support organizations like Givebones that recognize the importance of rescuing pets and helping shelters around the country. Approximately 3.7 million animals are euthanized each year due to overcrowding and poorly-funded shelters."
He also believes in adopting rescue dogs. The last six dogs that his family have adopted are rescue Great Danes. Dr. Pol also believes something that most humans who have adopted resuce dogs will agree when he says, "Dogs that are rescued and adopted understand what happened, and that is why they are so loyal."
Dr. Pol who at seventy years of age works up to 14 hours a day, and his on-the-go no nonsense demeanor may strike some as gruff. However, when one speaks to him or sees him in action one soon realizes Dr. Pol is a gentle giant who is passionate about animals loves what he does.
Dr. Pol has serviced 19,000+ clients during his 35 years as a veterinarian. National Geographic WILD follows Dr. Pol and his wife Diane across rural Michigan as they care for every family pet and head of livestock in need of his traditional, no-nonsense expertise and kindness.
