The San Jose State Spartans lost their Mountain West Conference debut 40-12 against the Utah State Aggies on Friday, September 27, 2013 at Spartans Stadium in San Jose, CA. The Spartans trailed the entire game and only scored one touchdown in the game.
The Aggies scored first with a 3-yard Chuckie Keeton touchdown pass to D.J. Tialave in their first possession, while the Spartans could only respond with an Austin Lopez field goal with theirs. Utah State added another touchdown score for a 14-3 first quarter lead.
After a pair of Nick Diaz field goals for Utah State in the second quarter, Lopez kicked another 3-pointer to cut San Jose State's deficit to 20-6. Diaz added another field goal to regain Utah State's 17-point lead at 23-6.
The Spartans looked like it would score a touchdown in its first possession of the second half after getting to the three yard line, but squandered the opportunity with a fumble after a bad snap. The Aggies scored another Keeton touchdown pass in their ensuing possession.
San Jose State finally scored a touchdown courtesy of RB Jason Simpson's 1-yard run in the third quarter. QB David Fales, however, failed to run in the 2-point conversion attempt. Keeton answered with his legs this time scoring a 9-yard run to give his team a commanding 37-12 lead in the third quarter. Diaz converted a field goal in the fourth quarter for the final 40-12 score.
San Jose State (1-3, 0-1 MWC) will travel to play Hawaii next Saturday, October 5, 2013. The Spartans remained winless against FBS opponents with their only win against FCS team Sacramento State.
