A Spartanburg man was placed under arrest after allegedly trying to kill his mother by stabbing her with a sword, Fox Carolina reported January 15.
Mark Winkler, 40, is being held on $20,000 bond after stabbing his 76-year-old mother with a sword Tuesday afternoon at their Gray Street home. This assault comes only days after Winkler and his wife were charged with seven counts of child neglect after a report led deputies to their roach-infested home.
Edna Winkler defended her son in an exclusive interview with Fox Carolina, saying her son had been trying to find his wife's nerve pills. He found the pills Tuesday afternoon and took more than a dozen, then assaulted Edna by holding a bayonet to her throat.
Edna said the assault on her began after Mark Winkler took the pills, then began arguing with his wife. Edna remained in her bedroom to allow the couple their privacy, but her son entered her bedroom. He attacked her with a sword and pierced her skin after cutting a hole in her sweater.
Winkler's wife was able to get the sword and bayonet away from her husband, and deputies were called.
Paramedics arrived, but treatment was refused by the victim, who suffered a small puncture wound during the attack. A Spartanburg County judge issued a warrant, charging Winkler with attempted murder.
None of the Winkler children witnessed the attack, as they were removed from the home last week and placed in the custody of Department of Social Services.
