Spanx and other shapewear can crush your organs and give you infections

Compression wear can be a nightmare. That's what doctors are warning. It isn't really "new" news, the warning has been made before. But it is making news again, after a report posted Monday, and updated Wednesday, by the Huffington Post.

The Huffington Post investigated just how much harm the helpful undergarments might be inflicting, and ask the tough questions to a gastroenterologist, dermatologist, and chiropractor for answers.

Shapewear squeezes your stomach, intestine, and colon, with potentially unpleasant and even damaging results.

The doctors explain that compression can exacerbate acid reflux and heartburn, can make an already-existing incontinence problem worse, and can lead to erosive esophagitis. At the least, it can cause temporary gas and bloating.

Sitting in shapewear can lead to a reversible condition called meralgia paresthetica, which is when the peripheral nerve in your thigh is compressed. This leads to tingling, numbness and pain in your legs, all of which can come and go or become constant.

The leg wear can act as a "giant rubber bands around your upper thighs" then sitting, circulation suffers, and blood clots can form. Shapewear can also trap sweat and moisture, which can result in yeast and bacterial infections.

So what's a woman to do? Let is all hang out? Doctors say don't wear it daily. Go up a size or two, if you can't get it off "without a struggle."

So what do you say? Spanx or no thanks?
