Spanish Royals celebrate National Day 2011

The Spanish royal family was on hand for the military parade and palace reception that mark this year’s Spanish National Day.  Paying tribute to their country were TM King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, TRH the Prince and Princess of Asturias, HRH the Infanta Elena, and HRH the Infanta Christina and Don Iñaki Urdangarin, the Dukes of Palma.  The military parade involved more than 3,000 troops, 147 vehicles, and 55 aircraft from the various Spanish armed forces and lasted about an hour and a half.  The whole event kicked off with a paratrooper flying down carrying the country’s flag and landing in front of the King.  As the parade concluded, the royal family continued their duties at the royal palace where they greeted representatives from various government agencies and entities.  In all the members of the royal family greeted about 1,000 people, quite a busy day!  Throughout Spain to mark the day about 40 public spaces opened up to the public and offered concerts and activities for free.  Throughout the day HM King Juan Carlos was aided with a cane as he is still recovering from the surgery he had on his Achilles tendon.  Prime Minister Zapatero, who announced in April that he would not seek another term, was spared the heckling from previous National Day observances.  Spain will have elections next month where the Socialist party is expected to lose power.
