Robert Kirkman wants you to know that Patrick’s sudden death in Episode 1 of Season 4 was all Scott Gimple’s idea.
In his October 14th interview with Vulture, Kirkman states that for the upcoming season, “Scott Gimple, the new showrunner, really wanted to explore that new possibility of the simple things, the really little things, coming to devastate these people. That’s what we’re going to explore.”
Ever since the eagerly anticipated 30 Without An Accident Episode aired, fans have been hypothesizing what kind of sickness could have caused show newcomer Patrick to die. Could the water supply be poisoned? Could the sick animals be passing on diseases? Or maybe it is something really devastating, like spontaneous zombification?
Then there’s that whole Daryl-licks-his-fingers theory of transmission.
Kirkman revealed that none of those guesses are correct. “Pulling in a new threat in your fourth season, I think, is a good thing,” Kirkman said of the virus. “Also, it’s important to know that this is really just some form of the Spanish Flu. It’s something that exists in our everyday world now; it’s a time where there is no modern medicine.”
Not that Kirkman is willing to let viewers in on many show secrets; he hints that no one is safe, not even primary cast members or children.
What do you think could be in store for fan favorites and everyone else at the prison, now that disease has come and they have no medicines or sanitary conditions to protect themselves with? Who do you think will die this year? Leave your comments below and share your opinion!
