Spaceship In The Bay

As a kid growing up in St Petersburg it was always a treat to go to the Pier. As kids we called the pier the spaceship. The upside down triangle looked truly like something from another world. I have so many memories of fishing with my uncle in the 70's at the pier.

On August 18, 2010, after a workshop lasting two hours, the St. Petersburg City Council accepted Mayor Bill Foster's recommendation to demolish the current Pier building in a straw-poll vote, 5-3; what would replace it was not clear. The binding vote, 7–1, was taken at an August 26 meeting.
On January 20, 2012, the St. Petersburg Pier Competition Jury unanimously selected Michael Maltzan Architecture's "The Lens" as the design for the new pier. The city provided simulated images of the "The Lens" on flickr.
The 1973 Pier is scheduled to close May 31, 2013. In September 2012, the city applied to the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers for a permit to demolish the pier. Approval will take 6 to 12 months.

I find this very sad. I don't feel the pier was out of style. To me it was out of site!

It goes without saying that being born with a photographic memory I would be attracted to photographing the world around me. Being a professional photographer for the past 30 years has taking me places I never dreamed of ending up. Contact Randy at randy@randysylvia.com
