Less than one month after Twin Galaxies and a report on Denton Arcade Game Examiner broke the news of a new all-time World Record on classic coin-op Space Harrier, the former champion has stepped back up to reclaim the top spot.
Chesterfield, United Kingdom gamer Philip Campbell regains the record nearly one year after first doing so, this time claiming the top of the list with 40,470,880 points. Campbell completed the record-setting game on one credit, entering and finishing the final stage on his final life. The score was verified and entered into offical video gaming database Twin Galaxies on May 25.
Campbell defeats fellow UK gamer Nick Hutt, who had reclaimed the record from Campbell just last month. Campbell originally beat Hutt's 2005 record in May of 2009. The all-time score has been held by gamers in the UK ever since Space Harrier's original release year of 1985. The original champion, Matthew Preece, held the top score for nearly 20 years before Hutt topped it in 2005.
Both Campbell and Hutt recorded their games in full, including detailed views of the settings and inner workings of their original arcade cabinets, to a Twin Galaxies official in Denton, TX USA.
