The Emmy and Grammy award-winning choir, the Soweto Gospel Choir, is going to be at the Meyerhoff on February 16, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. Noted for their colorful, inspiring performances, the Soweto Gospel Choir brings music to life with lots of movement and vibrant colors and harmony.
The New York Times said "The music was both meticulous and unstoppable…the songs were both spirited and spectacular." One can't help but feel the emotion behind the music as they perform each song. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's band and percussion section will be accompanying them for this performance. This also promises to be a cultural treat as the choir performs both traditional and contemporary music in 6 of South Africa’s 11 official languages.
The Soweto Gospel Choir was founded in November 2002 and were so impressive that the awards started rolling in. These awards include a Helpmann Award, Australia’s prestigious Performing Arts Award for “Best Contemporary Music Concert”; the 2003 American Gospel Music Award for “Best Choir”; the 2004 Gospel Music Award for “Best International Choir”; and locally, their debut CD 'Voices From Heaven' was nominated for a SAMA Award for “Best Traditional Gospel”. This CD also reached the Number 1 spot on Billboard’s World Music Chart, within three weeks of its US release, debuting at Number 3. Their next CD 'Blessed' was released in July 2004, followed by 'African Spirit' in 2007, through Universal Music.
