With Southwest Airlines poised to begin service at the world's busiest airport next month, the mega-discount carrier has already announced new non-stop flights from Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to Los Angeles. Beginning June 10, Southwest will offer one daily flight from ATL to LAX. This is in addition to the three flights each day already offered by subsidiary AirTran Airways.
Starting February 12, Southwest begins service from Atlanta to Baltimore/Washington, Chicago-Midway, Denver, Houston-Hobby and Austin, Texas. Las Vegas and Phoenix flights start-up one month later. When Southwest and AirTran complete their transition into a single carrier over the next couple of years, Southwest will eventually become the second largest airline in Atlanta. AirTran currently holds that position, trailing only hometown carrier, Delta Air Lines.
AirTran and Delta currently offer non-stop service from the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport to Atlanta, with Delta dominating the route by flying a dozen daily flights. When Southwest's new service begins next month, MSP customers will have the option of non-stop Atlanta flights on AirTran, or a connection via Chicago-Midway with Southwest several times each day. After the two carriers become one, all of the flights from Terminal 2/Humphrey at MSP will be operated by Southwest Airlines.
