Like September did, October 2011 has a number of running opportunities, so we will divide the list. First, let’s look at October up to the 15th.
October 8: Lexington Cares 5K- This event gives runners a chance to get off the asphalt. The race will be held on the fairways of Lexington Country Club in South Fort Myers. (Click here for a map) The race is a fundraiser for the Regional Cancer Center at Lee Memorial Health System to benefit the Breast Health Center. All participants are also treated to a post-race pancake buffet breakfast at the clubhouse. The race is scheduled to start at 7:30 am. Click here to register online.
October 10: Lake Placid High School Dragon 5K- This is a new race, held in the rural community of Lake Placid, off US 27. Note that this race is on a Monday, Columbus Day. The race, which is scheduled for an 8:00 am start, will start and finish at Lake Placid High School, located at 202 Green Dragon Drive. (Click here for a map) The day of the week isn’t what makes this race different. The Lake Placid area has hills. While this course doesn’t climb some of the most severe ones in the area, it does have some significant hill climbing. It will take you an hour to drive up there, but the course could make it worth your while. Click here to register online.
October 15: Sanibel Island 10K Race 4 F.I.S.H- This race flat course will travel through the streets of the sanctuary island, past many homes and resorts. The race is scheduled to begin at 7:30 am and will start at the Sanibel Community House, located at 2173 Periwinkle Way. (Click here for a map). The race is a fundraiser for the Friends in Service Here (F.I.S.H) of Sanibel organization that provides assistance and services to residents and visitors. Click here to register online.
