Southlake Central Market hosts health kick event

One of the top resolutions many people make at the beginning of the year is to exercise and eat healthier. Residents of the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex know the all-too-common excuse of a busy city lifestyle is really no reason not to be healthy. That's why the Southlake Central Market and Metro Moms Fitness are teaming up to host a special event to introduce everyone to fitness and nutrition in a fun way at the Metro Health Kick on Saturday, January 15th.

"The Metro Health Kick event at Central Market was created for families to bond over healthy activities and educational stations while learning about the importance of a nutritional and active lifestyle. Many families are unaware about where their food comes from or how it is produced and many families aren't as active as they once were 10-20 years ago. Metro Moms Fitness is trying to bring family physical activities back while also supporting whole, local foods that taste good and are good for you! It makes sense to help families live long, happy, active, and healthy lives!" says local mom and founder of Metro Moms Fitness, Christen Fox.

Ft. Worth Frugal Family Examiner had the opportunity to talk with Christen Fox, a dancer-turned-mommy who founded Metro Moms Fitness as a way to help out the average mom who doesn't think she has the time or energy to exercise.

Examiner: Who is Metro Moms Fitness?

Fox: Metro Moms Fitness is a community of mothers united by a common interest in health, nutrition, and fitness. With the increasing rate of childhood obesity, it is the mission of Metro Moms Fitness to educate mothers about the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle so mothers can become the driving force of their family's well-being.
We offer weekly exercise classes for expecting mothers and mothers with young children for a monthly fee, as well as free monthly events for mothers and children to have fun and establish long-lasting relationships.

All mothers and children are welcome to attend our fitness classes and events. We believe there is no greater gift to give your family than the gift of health and the wealth of knowledge in living an active lifestyle.

Examiner: How is Metro Moms Fitness different from any other gym membership?

Fox: Metro Moms Fitness puts all excuses mothers use for not exercising to rest. Metro Moms Fitness offers moms the opportunity to attend fun yet effective fitness classes by inviting their children to attend the classes with them and even participate in suitable exercises. As an added bonus, each Metro Moms Fitness location hosts a minimum of two social events each month so members can strengthen relationships with other members and bond through motherhood. By organizing these fun activities and events, members naturally create an accountability system amongst the other moms and form a sense of community while their children can playfully interact and socialize. That's something you don't get from a gym membership as gym-goers typically go to the gym, put in their time, and leave - without any socialization, accountability or leadership.

Metro Moms Fitness recognizes it’s tough to be a mom, whether you stay-at-home or work a full-time/part-time job. Moms need to vent and gain a support system to encourage them when times are tough and to laugh with them when things are well, childish. It is possible to care for both your child and yourself, and with Metro Moms Fitness you can do it all while having fun, meeting other moms, being with your child, and investing in your health. With Metro Moms Fitness mothers can gain support and establish relationships to help them on this journey called life. We're their one-stop-shop for everything health and family-related, no gym or childcare required!

Examiner: How can moms who don’t exercise regularly get started working out?

Fox: We support all fitness levels and backgrounds (or lack thereof). Each Metro Moms Fitness class is taught to three fitness levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) with a fourth level added for prenatal participants so women can start their fitness program at any time, no one ever feels left out, and they can continuously have the ability to challenge themselves to reach the next level.

We thrive in helping women jump-start their workout regimen and welcome all walks of life. Many of the mothers who attend our programs have come during pregnancy, after their children have grown, or after a several year absence of exercise. Many women have never participated in organized group exercise before which is why they feel confident in attending our classes because we are all-inclusive, non-judgmental, and will support them emotionally and physically through accountability and friendship.

Examiner: Many people try to start exercising at the beginning of the year. What advice do you have for sticking to your goals?

Fox: My advice for sticking with your goals for the new year are to not set your limits too high. Start with one obtainable goal and once you achieve it or stick with it - for a week, a month, whatever the duration - add another. Change can't happen overnight and the important thing to keep in the back of your mind is this is a lifestyle, not a goal, not a fad, not a diet.

Simple tips are to have a buddy-system for emotional support and accountability, allow one small splurge a day, and always keep moving.

Examiner: Is there anything else you would like to share about Metro Moms Fitness?

Fox: The average mother doesn't make time for herself because she's too busy with her full-time job as mother, attending to her family and the day-to-day challenges of life. While it's noble for a woman to be a selfless mom and put the needs of her children first, a very common result is a mother who is dissatisfied with herself. Many mothers tend to not lose the baby-weight they put on with their last child which leaves them with a lack of self-confidence and oftentimes poor. What mothers need to realize is that they need to put themselves first because if they are in poor health or overweight, they are at risk of countless dietary illnesses and diseases that will have long-term effects on their body and the emotional stress of their family. It's a lifestyle, it's about balance, and mom can have it all while raising a family because families can be healthy together and have fun while doing it - that is what Metro Moms Fitness is all about.
