The Southern University men’s basketball team set an NCAA record in their 116-12 victory over Champion Baptist 116-12 on Dec. 30. On Dec. 31, Southern’s coach Ron Banks told ESPN. com that he did not realize his team jumped to an NCAA-record 44-0 lead and that he did not try to run up the score.

We were preparing for league play and already had planned to change defenses throughout the game," Banks said. "It's not as if we pressed the entire game. We weren't trying to embarrass anyone."

Banks said he was hoping the Jaguars (3-9) would regain their confidence heading into SWAC play after a slow start. Southern has been blown out themselves this season, suffering, a 26-point loss at top-ranked Arizona and a 25-point loss at No. 12 Baylor earlier this month.

You're worried about the psyche of the team even though we played well against some of those teams," Banks said. "You can lose your confidence. This game was all about us. I was surprised at how well we played defensively, and it led to a bunch of transition baskets."

The Jaguars broke the all-divisions record held by Seton Hall, which scored the first 34 points against Kean College on Nov. 19, 1998.

Champion Baptist is located in Hot Springs, Ark., and is an independent member of the Association of Christian College Athletics. The Tigers finished 3-for-44 from the field and did not get in the scoring column until Kris Connor made two free throws with 5:10 left in the first half.

Champion Baptist also committed 27 turnovers and were outrebounded 72-29.

Trelun Bank led the way for Southern with 21 points while Calvin Godfrey added 17 points and 15 rebounds.

Southern paid Champions Baptist a couple of thousand dollars so the Jaguars could have a non-conference game at home and is the second-school that the program has paid to come to their campus. Southern also has home victories against NAIA- Blue Mountain College (76-59) and NAIA Dilliard University (107-64) this season.

Banks said his program received money to play on the road against Florida, Arizona, Baylor, Marquette, Denver and Louisiana Tech. Southern also was paid for participating in the Global Sports Tournament.

Southern leads the all-time series 2-0, also defeating Champions Baptist 90-36 in 2012.

Southern qualified for the NCAA Tournament last year as a result of winning the SWAC Tournament. The Jaguars have one NCAA Tournament victory in their history
