Southern tier fly fishing: update on the year ahead

As reported in a previous article, the Southern Tier’s 2012 fly fishing scene should prove to be quite interesting in 2012. In addition to the local fly fishing events already reported, there are a few more to add and update, as follows:

Ithaca Fishing Days. Hosted by the Leon Chandler Chapter of TU, this annual event is held to promote fly fishing and cold water conservation in the community. The previously reported tentative date of the event is now confirmed to be March 17.

The Fly Tying & Fly Fishing Symposium. This Utica-based event will unfortunately not be held this year. However, in its place, Jordan Ross of JP Ross Fly Rods, a Utica-based custom fly rod builder, is organizing the Trout Power Tournament, to be held on the fabled West Canada Creek in June of this year. The purpose of the tournament is to bring awareness to the river, the area and the businesses that surround the river. The tournament will be two days in length and will have a cash prize.

Guys, Flies, and Pies. Mark your calendars for this all-out fly tying extravaganza, to be held on February 18 at the North Greece Fire Department Firemen's Field Pavilion (Klafhen Park). The event will run from 3 pm – Midnight and cost $10 in advance or $12 at the door. As the name of the event suggests, this is a fly tying party, with great companionship, fun, pizza, and raffles.

Keep tuned to this site for updates on all of the events reported in “the year ahead”, and more news on the local fly fishing scene.
