Southern tier fly fishing: TU Banquet, Fly Fishing Academy, Trout stocking

The past week was filled with a lot of common spring weather variability. The week started on the warm side, turned very wet, and then cooled and turned white with snow. The rain and snow-melt combined to flood local creeks and rivers. As of the weekend, most are dropping and clearing but are still somewhat swollen and very cold.

This week will feature a trifecta of fishing goodness: the Al Hazzard TU Banquet, the FFF Fly Fishing Academy, and the start of early season trout stocking.

  • The Al Hazzard TU Banquet is scheduled for Saturday, March 23. It will be held at the Kalurah Temple located at 625 Dickson Street in Endicott. A Cash bar opens at 4:40 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Raffles, prizes, a silent auction, an entertaining guest speaker, and a live auction are all part of the big event. For tickets or more information, contact Nick DiNunzio at 607-754-7784.
  • The FFF Fly Fishing Academy is also scheduled for Saturday, March 23. The Fly Fishing Academy, hosted by the Twin Tiers Five Rivers Chapter of the Federation of Fly Fishers, will be held at the Elmira Free Academy High School from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This 'Learn to Fly Fish in a Day' event is a full day of instruction on fly fishing that is open to youths age 12 and over up through adults. Contact Kirk Klingensmith at 607-346-7189 for more information.
  • The New York State DEC will be making the rounds to local creeks and streams with hatchery trucks loaded with one year old brown trout. Early season stocking starts on March 19 and will continue through the weeks leading up to the season opener. These trout are normally in the 8" to 10" size but what they lack in size they make up for in a feisty attitude, particularly when caught with a lightweight fly fishing outfit. Young brown trout are also very cooperative and are a great quarry for young anglers learning to fly fish for trout.

The week ahead will be cold and could bring more snow to the area. Look for temps to average in the 30's to low 40's during the day and 20's to low 30's at night. The week will start out cold and snowy and gradually warm towards the weekend. For anglers looking to wet a line, expect water temps to remain very cold. For best early season trout fishing results, focus on fishing later in the day, particularly on days when the sun is out.
