Last week was a good reminder that fall is here and winter is not far off. Trees continue to drop their leaves, making it difficult to fish at times. Cold evening temperatures are in turn dropping water temperatures. And precipitation has been a mixed bag over the last few weeks.
Fishing for coldwater species continues to be good to excellent. Trout fishing in the Catskills is slowing but one can still catch fish, including dry fly fishing. Hatches remain olives, caddis, some isonychia, and light cahills. Streamer fishing is another way to go. The Salmon River and other Great lake tribs are fishing very well. The salmon run is slowing and steelhead and brown trout are coming into their own. Most recently, the release on the Salmon River was kicked up and it is now flowing at close to 1,500 CFS, making wading difficult. Egg-sucking leeches, buggers, eggs, and large nymphs have all been reported as working well. The warmwater bite is tailing down. Bass and panfish can still be caught but with water temps down, fishing is slower. The smallmouth bite on the warmwater rivers is also off, though bass can still be caught by fishing in deeper lies. Walleye fishing should be getting better with cold river temps.
A&G Outfitters is holding a special sale. Clearwater 7 & 8 weight outfits are on sale with 10% off. Access 7 & 8 weight outfits are discounted 15%. Also, the free steelhead fly tying lessons are coming to an end with the last one scheduled for this Thursday, October 31st. Thursday's session will feature how to tie the Steelhead Caddis and Egg Sucking Leech.
And speaking of sales, now is a good time to check out 2014 tackle. And it's a better time for buying 2013 bargains. Many dealers are in the process of cutting prices on older model equipment, particularly fly rods, to make way for the new 2014 products.
The week ahead weather will remain fall-like. In general, expect cloudy to partly cloudy conditions with very little chance of rain through the early part of the week. Temps will be in the 50's/30's for highs and lows. This will continue to cool water temperatures. On Friday and Saturday there is a higher potential for showers along with slightly warmer conditions.
