The week was relatively cold and dry - fall-like weather to be sure. The only fall colors left, for the most part, are those of oaks and aspens. Flows have been poor for trib fishing, with the exception of the Great Lakes tribs. Trout fishing in the Catskills is still an option where allowed. The stillwater fishery is mainly a coldwater species game.
A&G Outfitters concluded it's free steelhead fly tying classes on Halloween night. The shop still has some openings for the December steelhead trip. As mentioned previously, for $350, it's a great bargain.
Although we experienced a bit of a warm spell most recently, warmwater rivers continue to cool as do local ponds and lakes. Bass fishing, in general, can still be good this time of year, but look for fishing to slow with dropping temps. The author fished a local pond on Saturday afternoon and did very well using an olive wooly bugger on a sink tip line. Bites were subtle. The pond was crystal clear and cool and bass could be seen cruising the deeper areas of the pond. The smallmouth bite is also still on but for wading anglers, conditions are tough due to the rain we received last week. If still looking to fly fish for smallmouth, fish the upper sections of the Tioughnioga and Chenango. Trout fishing is still on in the Catskills but check regulations before heading out as the general trout season closed on October 15. Reports continue to be made indicating some fish have moved up the Finger lakes tribs. But we still really need a good shot of water now that temperatures have dropped to get the main body of fish to move up. The Salmon River, on the other hand, is experiencing very high flow conditions and mixed results. Fish are being taken but the bumps in flows over 2,000 CFS apparently dirtied the river some. If planning to fish the Douglaston Salmon Run, remember that cleated / studded boots are required as of November 1st.
The week ahead will be colder and will feature some precipitation. Daytime highs will range from the low 40's to the upper 50's and lows will hover around freezing. In general, skies will be cloudy with a 70% chance of rain expected on Thursday. With air and water temps dropping as we move towards winter, remember to layer up, bring an extra change of clothes, and use a wading staff / cleated or studded boots.
