The unseasonably warm weather just continues its hold on our area. We desperately need snow for spring. While precipitation numbers aren’t far off the norm for this year, there is virtually no snowpack. The Binghamton area has only received 27” of snow for the year, with spring just around the corner as we enter into February.
For the week ahead, the following are noteworthy events and announcements for our area:
- The Fly Fishing Show concluded its Somerset, NJ appearance on January 29. It returns to Lancaster, PA at the Lancaster County Convention on February 18 – 19.
- The Leon Chandler TU chapter’s next monthly meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 14. The monthly presenter has not been announced yet. The main focus of the meeting will be chapter business and planning for Ithaca Fishing Day, planned for March 19. As mentioned in last week’s “week ahead” post, keep in mind that the chapter has raffle tickets for sale to benefit Trout in the Classroom. The raffle winner gets an Orvis Zero Gravity 9 foot 4 weight 4 piece fly rod, complete with rod tube and sock, a Hardy LRH Lightweight Reel, Cortland Platinum and Sylk WF 4 weight fly line, backing, leaders, and a fly box filled with favorite local patterns tied by chapter members. The chapter is selling 50 tickets priced at $20 each for the prize. Tickets will be on sale at chapter events or can be purchased by contacting Josh Filter at jjf33@cornell.edu.
- There’s a new online fly shop in town. Kurt Nelson, aka Kurtis Mayfly, recently opened Castle Creek Fly Fishing (CCFF). CCFF offers custom tied flies and leaders for purchase online, fly tying and fly casting lessons, and a bevy of videos on topics ranging from fly tying and conservation, to fly fishing-related music. Kurt is an ardent conservationist with the Al Hazzard Chapter of TU and an outstanding fly fisherman. His site can be found here: Castle Creek Fly Fishing.
Look for another week of unseasonable daytime highs. Nighttime lows, however, will drop well below freezing and to as low as the mid teens. Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his lair this past week and saw his shadow, predicting another 6 weeks of winter. Let’s hope his prediction is right, and that the winter weather brings enough snow to build a good snowpack for cold water flows for the upcoming year.
