Southern Star Brewing, located in the Houston suburb of Conroe, is a low- key brewing operation that has thrived over the past few years with its three signature creations: Pine Belt Pale Ale, Buried Hatchet Stout, and Bombshell Blonde. The brewery has never delved into seasonal beers but it plans to introduce its first seasonal at the end of April: Southern Star Walloon, a Belgian style Grisette.
What exactly is grisette, you might ask? Well, it is certainly an obscure style of beer and it is doubtful that many individuals (and that includes the majority of beer geeks) have ever heard of it. Grisette is a style originally developed back in the 1800’s in the Belgian province of Hainaut. This beer is a farmhouse style ale with added features of a Belgian wit and Belgian triplel. This beer is brewed light, making it a good choice for summer refreshment.
Even though Southern Star Walloon is going to be lighter than Southern Star’s other products, the brewery promises it will not be devoid of flavor. Clove and noble hops will be added to the mix for character and flavor. Thus, the beer can be expected to offer some light spice but still be refreshing and thirst- quenching overall.
Southern Star Brewing plans to introduce this product on April 30, 2011, at its weekly Saturday tour. It promises to be a hit with Southern Star loyalists, so be sure to arrive for the 1pm to 3pm Saturday tour bright and early to sample Southern Star Walloon, the first of what will likely be several Southern Star seasonals.
