Walterboro is a small community along Interstate 95. It sits about one hour north of Savannah, Georgia. It is a small town typical of the south. It belongs to a section, of the part of South Carolina, known as the Lowcountry. It is 45 minutes from the ocean and has its own watery areas, swamps. When you think of small town America, Walterboro is a place you may think of.
But the last week, Walterboro has become like LA. A string of 3 shootings, has left 3 dead and 11 wounded. Walterboro has had its share of violence, armed robberies and even a few murders. But the last week, has had more shootings and violence than any can remember in recent history. The first shooting occurred last Monday. A drive by left 3 dead (including a one year old child) and 5 injured. It was a drive-by at the corner of Gerideau and McDaniels streets. The family were enjoying the get together when the shots rang out. The second shooting occurred on Wednesday, ending two more people to the hospital. Later on Wednesday, the Walterboro police arrested an alleged suspect in Monday's shooting, 19 year old Danziel Chapman.
On Thursday, local officials held a news conference to let the public aware of the actions by law enforcement agents involved in the investigations. The contingent of enforcement agents include Walterboro PD, Colleton County Sheriff's Department, South Carolina State Marshals, the ATF, and SLED (South Carolina Law Enforcement Division). The press conference was also attended by Gov. Stanford. Also on Thursday, local ministers and parishioners took to the streets to show a force of opposition to the violence that has been occurring.
On Friday,a day after the press conference and increased presence on the streets, another shooting occurred. This shooting seems to be a domestic dispute turned violent. I woman was shot at by her boyfriend. Also, during the investigations of the shootings, a stolen vehicle from North Carolina was found burned.
The local officials haven't determined whether the vehicle is connected to the shootings. They have been checking every lead in the case but haven't ruled out any possibilities for motive. They ask that anyone with information about the recent violence contact law enforcement (843) 549-1811 or Colleton County Crimestoppers (800) 222-8477.

This is NOT the "wild west". It is gangland.

    Hey there,

I hate to break it to you, but historically and empirically speaking, the Old West was very rarely 'wild'.

The reason it was rarely 'wild' is that most everyone carried a pistol strapped to their hips and so, good manners toward other folks was highly encouraged and practiced!

Like the old slogan for Colt Firearms used to tout: Big or Small, Little or Tall, Sam Colt makes everybody equal.

Your piece describes a lack of not only common courtesy, but common decency, morals, and a good upbringing.

The fact of the matter is that nearly the whole state of Illinois has become a cesspool. The Land of Lincoln, as they say, 'it ain't no mo.'

Quite frankly, Illinois has joined Mexifornia as a national joke, with Chicago being an outright boil which needs to be lanced: starting with its lackluster mayor.

Were I living in Illinois, I would be so embarrassed that I would MOVE!

    Cheers.
