After the Panthers (1-2, 1-1 SWAC) went up 59-56 on Christopher Barrick’s 25-yard field goal, Joseph connected with Doss for the 24-yard game winner.
Southern rallied from a 35-13 deficit early in the third quarter, first with Lenard Tillery’s 2-yard scoring run. At the start of the fourth quarter, Tillery ran it in from 13 yards out to cut the Jaguars’ deficit to 35-27.
Joseph then found Doss for a 25-yard pass play and then connected with Bradley Coleman on the two-point conversion to tie the game, 35-all.
From there, the teams traded touchdowns.
PV quarterback Jerry Lovelocke’s two-yard scoring run was answered by Joseph’s seven-yard toss to Doss.
Southern matched Panther running back Johnta Hebert’s third rushing touchdown of the game, a 44-yard burst, with an 11-yard TD throw to Willie Quinn with 50 seconds left in regulation.
In the first overtime, Southern struck first when Joseph found Nico Talbert for a 10-yard score.
Prairie View countered with Courtney Brown’s third rushing score, a 12-yarder.
Joseph finished with 30 completions on 48 attempts for 480 yards and six touchdowns, while Lovelocke completed 32 of 43 throws for 353 yards and a touchdown.
Brown (224 yards, three TD’s) and Hebert (153 yards, three TD’s) paced Prairie View’s rushing attack.
Doss ended the day with 214 yards on nine catches.
Notes: Southern and Prairie View combined for 1,397 yards of total offense…in particular Joseph and Lovelocke combined for 833 yards and seven touchdowns, without a single interception.
