Southern Miss knocks off Tulane, wins 2nd straight game

USM took care of business on Saturday afternoon at home in the "Green House" by defeating the Tulane Green Wave (12-8, 2-5), 67-54. The Golden Eagles (16-5, 5-3) were led by the senior forward and all-conference star Gary Flowers who posted another double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds in the contest.

The Eagles trailed early as Tulane went up 17-16 with 10:09 left in the 1st half. But, the Black and Gold poured it on to take a 34-22 advantage to the locker room at the half. In the 2nd period, Tulane went on a run hitting four three-pointers to pull within 45-50 with 10:24 to play. Southern Miss then went on a 16-1 scamper of their own to close it out against the Green Wave.

For USM, senior guard R. L. Horton had 12 points on the afternoon with junior guard / forward Mo Bolden adding 11 points of his own. For Tulane, Jordan Callahan led all scorers with 20 points, including 6 of 11 from 3-point range, and Kendall Timmons chimed in with 18 points in the loss.

The Eagles connected on 21 of 49 for 42.9% from the field and held the Wave to 20 of 53 for just 37.7% overall. USM also went 21 of 27 from the charity stripe for 77.8% while Tulane only shot 4 of 10 for 40% at the FT line. Southern Miss outrebounded the Green Wave 42-29 as they are #30 in rebounding in the nation.

With the win, Southern Miss has won their 2nd game in a row and is above .500 half way through conference play for the first time since the 2000-20001 season. Next up for the Eagles will be a conference road game at the UAB Blazers (15-5, 5-2) at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, AL. Start time is set for 7 p.m. CST.
