Southern Illinois storm spotter training available live and by webinar

Are you wanting to learn more about severe weather and become a certified Storm Spotter for the National Weather Service? If you live in the southern Illinois area you can take advantage of a live training seminar on Saturday, February 4 at John A. Logan College.

The NWS Skywarn Storm Spotter program trains local citizens to be able to recognize and report severe weather events. The reports gives the NWS more information when providing weather warnings during severe weather outbreaks.

The live training at John A. Logan College in Carterville starts at 9 a.m. and runs about three hours. It will be facilitated by Steve Land, Williamson County Emergency Management Agency Director. According to the NWS-Paducah website, reports from trained spotters are combined with doppler radar to create warnings when there are severe thunderstorms, tornadoes or floods in progress.

If you can't make it to the live seminar, consider registering for one of the webinar trainings that the NWS is offering. These webinars will be the same as attending a live class and will offer the same information as the Basic Spotter Class (Spotter Concepts). You can register for one of the webinars here.

With spotter training you can learn to identify storm systems and cloud formations as well as how to know when to report weather that could be part of a severe weather event. This training is designed for new spotters and also for veteran spotters who want a refresher on their training.
