Southern Florida’s top two Division II teams, the Naples Hammerheads and the Boca Raton Buccaneers dominated Saturday’s matches against their northern Division II opponents, the Orlando Griffins and the Tampa Bay Krewe in weekend rugby action across the Sunshine State. The Hammerheads hammered the Griffins 69 to 41, while the Buccaneers blasted the Krewe 41 to 5.

The Naples Hammerheads (10-1-0) versus Orlando Griffins (6-4-1) rugby match turned into a high scoring affair for both clubs involved in the game. In this match, played Saturday afternoon in Estero, Fla., the Hammerheads secured 11 tries and seven conversions to earn their 69 points. Meanwhile, the Griffins scored six tries, four conversions, and one penalty kick on their way to 41 points for the match.
The match between the Boca Raton Buccaneers (9-2-0) and the Tampa Bay Krewe (8-2-1) took place Saturday afternoon at Cuscaden Park in Tampa, Fla. However, the home field did not work to Tampa Bay's advantage. In this game, the Buccaneers scored seven tries and three conversions to earn their 41 points, and Boca Raton succeeded in limiting the Krewe to only one try, or five points, for the entire match.

This coming Saturday, the Naples Hammerheads will host the Tampa Bay Krewe at Estero Park in Estero, Fla. Meanwhile, the Boca Raton Buccaneers will host the Orlando Griffins at Don Estridge Middle School in Boca Raton, Fla.
USF Bulls beat EC Tritons in local collegiate action
In collegiate rugby action around Tampa Bay Saturday afternoon, the University of South Florida (USF) Bulls defeated their rivals from across Tampa Bay, the Eckerd College (EC) Tritons, by a score of 41 to 12 in on the USF campus in Tampa, Fla. No other college-level scores had been recorded as of the time of publication Sunday evening.
Other weekend rugby action from around the Sunshine State
In the remaining Division II Florida Rugby Union (FRU) match from Saturday, the Daytona Beach Coconuts (4-7-0) defeated the Fort Lauderdale Knights (4-7-0) 38 to 32 at Richard Petty Park in Daytona Beach, Fla. While both clubs scored six tries a piece, Daytona dominated the conversion ration battle (4 out of 6 versus 1 out of 6).
Two Division III (D-III) matches also took place across Florida this past Saturday afternoon. The Brevard Old Red Eyes (6-2) routed the Indian River Raptors (0-6) 92 to 19 in Vero Beach, Fla. However, the 19 points scored by Indian River go down on record as the club’s first points ever scored in a rugby match. This is the Raptors inaugural season of play in the FRU.
Just a short trip down Florida’s east coast in West Palm Beach, the Gainesville Hogs (6-1) defeated the Palm Beach Panthers (6-1) by a score of 20 to 15. This was the first loss by Palm Beach this season. With three weeks left until the FRU D-III finals in Cocoa, Fla., Gainesville leads the Blue pool, while Palm Beach is on top in the Red Pool.
