South Llano River State Park is a hidden jewel in the western Texas hill country

South Llano River State Park, near Junction in southwest Texas, is a welcome oasis in this arid landscape. The park fronts about a mile and a half of the South Llano River, shaded by towering pecan trees.

Much of the park lies in a relatively flat river bottom, and the trails in that area are wide and mostly level for easy walking and mountain biking. Trails meander along the river and around Buck Lake, a small lake with a fishing dock and tree-shaded benches.

Adjacent to South Llano River State Park, the Buck Wildlife Management Area boasts 18 acres of hiking and mountain biking trails through more rugged Hill Country terrain.

Inner tubes can be rented at the park headquarters and there are designated put in and take out spots for canoes and tubes. There's also a day use area along the river with picnic facilities and a swimming area.

Wildlife abounds in South Llano River State Park. There are lots of deer and turkeys roaming the park, and several bird blinds are available for viewing the abundant bird life.

From October through March, the lower section of South Llano River State Park, along the river, is closed to visitors to protect the breeding and nesting grounds of the Rio Grande turkeys. Up to 800 turkeys winter in the park and they are sensitive to being disturbed during this season. The campground and the 2,123-acre wildlife management area remain open during this time, but the wildlife area is closed for hunting during certain periods. Be sure to check the park website for closure dates and restrictions.
