South Florida teacher charged with battery of child by exposure to urine

According to a Feb. 20, 2014 report on NBC Miami a South Florida teacher has been arrested and faces felony charges for meting out an unusual sort of punishment.

Police say 58-year-old Jennifer Forshey accused a 10-year-old boy of deliberately clogging a urinal with paper towels, then ordered him unclog the urinal, without giving him any guidance or safety equipment. So, the boy used his bare hands.

A teacher, interviewed by the police, reported that he saw Forshey instruct the boy to remove the paper towels and the school's principle said the child came to his office looking for soap because his hands smelt like urine.

The Coral Springs Police department arrest form changes Forshey with "battery of child by exposure to urine". Forshey was released with a $1000. bond.

Joshua Hertz, attorney for the victim's mother released the following statement on her behalf:

The only reason we are bringing this story to the public is to find out if any other child has been treated in this way before. We want to protect this child and possibly any other children that may have been subjected to this form or corporal and unmoral punishment. My client wants to find out why a teacher would allow this to happen. She also asks for her and her son's privacy to be respected and wants her son to retain a normal life back at the school.

Other parents whose children attend the school had mixed reactions. One saying: "That teacher should go back to jail. That's not cool", while others say it was a bad call by a good teacher. But Forshey, who admits making the boy clean the urinal, believes she's done nothing wrong.

Sadly, this could have all been avoided if Forshey, who by all accounts has been a good teacher, had kept a cool head, found another way to discipline the boy and called in the janitorial staff to safely and properly unclog the urinal.
