South Dakota health officials investigate food outbreak in Pierre

The South Dakota Department of Health reported Thursday that they are investigating a possible foodborne outbreak linked to a basketball game in Pierre in which approximately 50 people were stricken with diarrhea.

According to the health department news release, health officials are working to collect food histories from those who are ill and will be testing stool samples to identify an organism. No food from the basketball game has been submitted for testing.

The health department also distributed an electronic food borne Illness questionnaire to high school students and staff in an effort to get more information on the outbreak.

Preliminary findings show that the gastrointestinal illness appears to be short in duration.
