Join the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia for a special grand opening celebration and experience the only observatory of its kind in the nation, one of the largest planetariums in the Southeast and the only permanent 4D Theater in the state. Guests can also enjoy the museum’s new historical telescope gallery, lobby, store and cafe. The grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, August 16 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The museum atrium will also include permanent presence from representatives of the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, South Carolina ETV and the Columbia Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau
Opening along with the new expansion, the museum’s new changing art exhibit, Building a Universe, will feature creations by 15 artists whose work deals with space and the universe, either directly or conceptually.
To kick off the day, there will be a ribbon cutting and model rockets launched by students from the Challenger Learning Center. The day will be packed full of live music representing four popular South Carolina genres, bluegrass, blues, beach and gospel, as well as other exciting programs and activities.
In addition, the first 100 people in line will receive free general admission and other free tickets and discounts to the museum for a year.
