The Backstreets Pub and Grill in Clemson, S.C., angered a number of people after it posted an insulting sign informing patrons that concealed weapons would not be allowed, despite a new state law allowing concealed weapons permit holders to carry firearms in restaurants that serve alcohol. The sign, however, insulted gun owners as "douchebags," and sparked a backlash from outraged citizens, Twitchy reported Tuesday.
"No concealed weapons allowed," the sign says. "If you are such a loser that you feel a need to carry a gun with you when you go out, I do not want your business. Douchebag."
The bar doubled down on Facebook with a message reiterating the original slur.
"Sorry, but I'm not sorry. If you feel the need to bring a gun into a college bar you are a douche bag. And if you're drinking than you are violating the law," the bar said on Facebook.
The page appears to have been deleted, but a Google cache clearly shows the messages.
The pub also fired back at gun owners, calling them "gun nuts" and "mouth breathing morons."
According to the cached version of the pub's Facebook page, the original sign was replaced with something more generic and less insulting. According to the post, the original sign was temporary.
Nevertheless, the damage was done.
"@BackstreetsPub interesting business model. you have better results needlessly insulting potential customers? Seems odd," one person tweeted.
"I would not think that you would be in business for another quarter after your idiotic sign posting on your wall," another person said.
Yelp users also responded negatively to the bar's sign.
"Owner is a gun grabbing liberal who insults customers openly who do not agree with his un-American views. He doesn't want your patronage," one person said. "Boycott this business!"
"I spent 23 years of my life protecting your right to voice your personal opinions, regardless of how asinine they are. I can only hope that your employees read Yelp and other social media sites and realize that your ship is quickly sinking and bail out as fast as they can. I can't think of any sweeter justice than for you to lose your business for such a moronic insult," another person said.
Several claimed they got sick after eating at Backstreets, and one person posted a picture of cockroaches he claimed were climbing the wall.
Another person posted a picture of a raised middle finger.
The bar has not responded to the backlash on its Twitter feed as of this writing, but thanked those who supported its decision.
"Thanks to all the locals and friends of backstreets that have overwhelming supported me today," the bar said.
