Each summer families flock to Lake Hartwell, Lake Keowee, Lake Succession, Lake Greenwood and other great lake destinations in upstate, SC. Jet Skis, Wave Runners and other personal watercrafts are often part of the fun out on the lakes. Parents, grandparents and family may want to keep in mind the South Carolina laws (listed below) when supervising children or teenagers on Jet Skis and Wave Runners.
The South Carolina Boating Handbook is available for free as a download online from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Parents can view the handbook as a PDF as well as print a copy to keep for reference. The handbook offers a section that specifically addresses use and operation of PWCs (personal watercrafts).
South Carolina Laws about Children Operating a Personal Watercraft
According to the South Carolina Boating Handbook, the general laws are:
- persons ages 16 and older can operate a PWC with no restrictions
- persons under age 16 can drive a boat or PWC less than 15 horsepower without restrictions
- children under the age of 16 can operate a boat or PWC that is 15 horsepower or greater only when accompanied by an adult, who is 18 years old or older and is not under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs
- anyone operating a PWC must wear a Coast Guard approved personal flotation device
