Little Women: The Musical is based on the beloved book by Louisa May Alcott. The musical version has a book by Allan Knee, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein and music by Jason Howland.
Alcott's novel was originally published in two volumes, the first appearing in 1868 and the second in 1869. The second volume was originally called Good Wives. The entire first printing sold out in a short time, and the original publisher struggled to keep up with demand. Alcott subsequently wrote two sequels, Little Men and Jo's Boys.
The musical version hasn't made it to the big screen yet, but Alcott's novel has been adapted for film numerous times. Most notably, the Oscar-winning version of 1933 starred a young Katherine Hepburn as Jo March. A 1949 featured June Allyson as Jo, Elizabeth Taylor as Amy and Peter Lawford as Theodore "Laurie" Laurence. The cast of the 1994 version included Susan Sarandon as Marmee, Winona Ryder as Jo, Claire Danes, Kirsten Dunst, Eric Stoltz and Christian Bale.
