In the 60s and 70s, Old Town Alexandria was known for history, charm and a certain stodginess. In the 80s and 90s, the real estate boom took all. Now, some interesting changes are occuring; Old Town is maturing past the history and fast growth into an urban center with a diverse food and wine scene.
Aquavia, which bills itself as Miami fusion, is owned by Mariano Jesus Claudio, Jr. and Nick Cordero. It's a chic Latino environment which actually does not follow the rich heavy tradition of Puerto Rico, where foods have complex spices and are extremely meat-based. The menu focuses on a variety of ceviches--the Latin alternative to sushi--and a wonderful selection of starters.
However, the real menu is the martini and cocktail list. South Beach in Old Town, indeed!
As is typical, the restuarant is downstair and the lounge upstairs. If you are in the mood for a Latin beat and a cocktail that matches, this is the place to go.
Aguaviva is located in Old Town at 808 King--close to the King Street Metro but just a bit north, no pun intended, of the traditional center of action on King close to the water.
If you need a break from winter doldrums, check out Aguaviva!
