South Bay hoopsters begin playoffs

Local boys' and girls' basketball leagues ended and the CIF-Los Angeles City and Southern Section playoffs start today.

In the CIF-L.A. City Section Marine League, Washington won the league, as Narbonne and Banning ended up tied for second place.

The Gauchos completed the league with a 71-42 rout of host Gardena last Friday. At the same time, the Colts topped rival Wilimington Banning, 66-57, getting balanced scoring, led by Tony Ingram with 21 points and Dominic McMasters with 16. Carson ended up in fourth place at 7-5 but is 18-9 overall.

The Pilots, who ended league at 8-4 and are 16-10 overall and enjoying the best season in several years, were led by Joel Anderson with a game-high 28 points.

Carson is in the City Division II as the seventh seed and begin at home against No. 10 Verdugo Hills Friday at 7 p.m.

Banning is seeded fourth in Division III and begin at home against No. 13 Jefferson from South L.A. at the same time.

Narbonne is in Division II where it is seeded fifth and opens at home against No. 12 Torres.

San Pedro is also Division II as the No. 8 seed and open at home against No. 9 seed L.A. Jordan and Gardena (2-10, 11-18) is seeded 14th and start at No. 3 Granada Hills.

League champion Washington is seeded No. 6 in Division I and begin at home against 11th seed Fremont.

Westchester, which lost a heartbreaking 56-53 contest to host Fairfax last Friday to fall into a three-way tie with the Lions and Palisades for the Western League title, is seeded third and open against No. 14 Sun Valley Poly.

Top seed in Division I is defending champion Woodland Hills Taft, followed by Fairfax.

In the CIF-Southern Section boys' basketball, Leuzinger was able to capture the Bay League with a perfect 10-0 record. The Olympians, behind their depth that are led by juniors Eric Childress and Trey Anderson, clinched the league title with a key 61-48 win at West Torrance (tied for second place with Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula at 7-3) then finished unbeaten by blowing out fifth place Redondo (2-8), 67-31, last Thursday at Leuzinger.

The Olympians, who are 21-5 overall, begin the CIF-Southern Section Division IIA playoffs as the No. 4 seed at home against Baldwin Park, fourth place finisher from the Montview League, Friday at 7 p.m.

In another key Bay contest, Peninsula continued its home cooking, with help from its rowdy crowd "The Zoo", with a key 51-40 victory over West last Thursday.

The Panthers are on the road at Garden Grove, the second place finisher in the Garden Grove League, while the Warriors are in IIIAAA where they host Santa Barbara, which tied for second in the Channel League.

All six Bay teams are in the playoffs on the road. Fourth place Mira Costa is at Camarillo in IIAA; fifth place Redondo has a giant task of facing top seed Ocean View in Huntington Beach in IIAA and last place Palos Verdes (0-10) will have a wild card game at Hueneme in Oxnard tomorrow with top seed Calabasas, the Marmonte League champion, awaiting to host the winner on Friday in IIIAA play.

St. Bernard finished unbeaten and rolled over virtually every team in the Camino Real League. The Vikings (10-0, 19-7) open as the top seed in VAA at home against the winner of Wednesday's wildcard winner between San Gabriel Academy and Cate from Carpinteria Friday.

Top seed in the highly competitive IVAA is Gardena Serra, which fiinished its unbeaten 8-0 Del Rey League season with a 79-44 rout at third place La Salle in Pasadena on Feb. 6.

The Cavaliers start at home against Salesian, the third place finisher from the Santa Fe League on Wednesday.

Second place Bishop Montgomery opens at home against Templeton, third out of the Los Padres League, also Wednesday.

In the Pioneer League, North Torrance rolled to the title at 9-1 (its only loss being a 45-44 overtime upset by last place and host El Segundo on Feb. 7), with Lawndale (7-3) second and Torrance (5-5) third.

The Saxons enter the Division IIA playoffs with a 20-6 overall record and at home against La Habra, the third place team  from the Freeway League, on Friday.

The Cardinals are in IIIAAA and begin at home against Hart, the third place team from the Foothill League, on Friday. The Tartars are in IIIAA where they host Rosemead, an at-large team from the Mission Valley League.

Fourth place South Torrance will host Buena Park, an at-large team from the Freeway League.

Santa Monica won the Ocean League at 9-1, followed by Inglewood at 7-3. The Sentinels are playing in IIAA where they host Saugus. The Vikings are in the prestigious IAA where they host Roosevelt High of Corona.

Morningside finished in a tie fourth with Culver City and will play in the highly regarded Division IVAA, that includes top private schools and top-ranked Serra, No. 2 La Verne Lutheran and third ranked Torrance Bishop Montgomery. The Monarchs begin at University Prep in Victorville on Wednesday.

Morningside closed league play in style as a spoiler last Thursday at home. The Monarchs stunned cross town rival Inglewood 56-49, throwing the Sentinels, who were a week earlier tied with Santa Monica for first place, two games below the Vikings. Inglewood was also upset at Beverly Hills on Feb. 7.

The Centaurs play in IIA where they open at Orange League champion Anaheim Savanna, which is enjoying one of its best seasons ever at 22-2, on Friday.

Hawthorne finished in the bottom of the Ocean but still made the Division IIIAA playoffs. The Cougars visit San Marcos on Friday. 

Coastal League champion Rolling Hills Prep is second seed in Division VA and begins at home against Wednesday's first round winner between Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley Christian and Simi Valley Grace Brethern on Friday.

In VAA, Lennox Academy was third in the Coastal League and open at Bishop Diego in Santa Barbara on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, Inglewood Animo Leadership will face a very tough task at Academy League champion Huntington Beach Brethern Christian, which reportedly has a seven-foot-five player, and Prep League third place finisher Rolling Hills Estates Chadwick in at Linfield Christian in Temecula.

In girls' basketball, Serra and St. Bernard tied for first place in the highly prestigious Del Rey League, but the Vikings won the coin flip.

The deadlock was a help from the Lady Cavaliers' 60-48 home win over the Vikings on Feb. 7.

Serra, which is 22-3 overall and ended Del Rey at 7-1, was led by Rejane Verin with 18 points and Simone Thompson with 13.

St. Bernard had a game-high 27 points by Lajohna Drummer.

The Vikings (7-1, 21-7), though, are seeded fourth as they host Costa Mesa High from the Orange Coast League in the first round on Thursday.

The Cavaliers are seeded seventh and begin at home against Notre Dame High of Sherman Oaks, an at-large team of the Mission League.

West Torrance was able to clinch the Bay League championship at 9-1 by downing host Peninsula (third in Bay at 6-4), 54-37, last Thursday.

The Lady Warriors are the top seed in Division IIIAA where they begin at home against Pasadena (at-large from the Pacific League) on Saturday.

Second place Palos Verdes (8-2) is in IIIAA and host San Juan Hills, at large from the Sea View League. The Panthers are at Sunkist League runner-up Patriot High in Riverside. Both of these contests are on Thursday.

Redondo, which finished fourth in the Bay at 5-5, visits Mt. Baldy League champion Chino in IIAA play on Saturday.

Fifth place Mira Costa (2-8) visits Camarillo, which tied for the Pacific View League title.

South Torarnce and Torrance tied for the Pioneer League crown, but the Spartans won the coin flip for first place and will host Rowland, the third place team from the Hacienda League.

The Tartars, who have been on a hot streak down the stretch, will host Garden Grove Santiago. Both of these contests are on Thursday.

Fourth place North Torrance is at Orange League champion Savanna in Anaheim in IIA on Saturday.

Inglewood will host Martin Luther King in Division IA on Saturday. The Lady Sentinels finished third behind champion Culver City and runner-up Santa Monica in Ocean play.

Hawthorne finished only 4-6 in the Ocean League but did end its dubious 61-game league losing streak, dating back to 2005, with a league opening 60-42 home win over Beverly Hills on Jan. 11. The Cougars are at Garden Grove League runner-up Rancho Alamitos of Fountain Valley on Thursday in IIIAA.

Ocean champion Culver City hosts Placentia El Dorado in IIA on Saturday.

Bishop Montgomery, the third place finisher from the Del Rey, is at Sunshine League co-champion Notre Dame Academy in West L.A. in the first round on Thursday.

In VAA play, Animo, the third place finisher from the Harbor League, will visit Mission Prep in Granada Hills on Thursday.

Rolling Hills Prep is in VA and is at Lone Pine, the third place finisher from the Desert-Mountain League.

For the L.A. City Section, Narbonne is top seed in the Division I and hosts No. 16 Van Nuys in the first round on Thursday.

Defending two-time City champion Carson, which is faced with rebuilding this year but still ended up second in league behind the powerful Gauchos, received the No. 5 seed in Division I and hosts 12th ranked Franklin from Highland Park. San Pedro is seeded 10th and visits No. 7 Crenshaw.

Western League champion Westchester is seventh seed and hosts No. 10 Reseda.

Gardena, which tied for third with San Pedro in Marine play, is top seed in Division III and starts at home against last seed Panorama on Thursday.

The City Small Schools start tonight at 7 p.m. It includes No. 13 Harbor Teachers Prep at home against No. 20 Downtown Magnet and No. 19 University of Southern California Masters at No. 14 San Pedro Port of L.A.

All playoff games begin at 7 p.m.
