Report: 49ers sign K Billy Cundiff

David Akers was not cut from the team, but he will need to earn his way to playing in the playoffs.

The 49ers announced they have signed 10-year veteran Billy Cundiff. Both Cundiff and Akers will be competing against one another to play in the NFC Divisional playoffs. To make room for Cundiff on the 53-man roster, the 49ers waived LB Eric Bakhtiari,

Akers is ranked 30th in the NFL in field goal percentage with 69 percent. Most recently, he made two out of four attempts in Week 17 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Cundiff was last on the Washington Redskins earlier this season before being cut after missing four of his last six kicks. He was released on October 10th in favor of Kai Forbath. He was most known for missing a 32-yard attempt for the Baltimore Ravens against the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game last year.

In 2010, Cundiff was a Pro Bowl selection when he made 26 out of 29 attempts. From 50 or more yards, Cundiff has made five out of 19 attempts in his career, but has made 81 percent of his attempts (134 of 165) from shorter distances.
